Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. shortening, use part butter
  • 2 c. dark syrup
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 c. nuts, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 3/4 c. buttermilk
  • 11 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 bottle Anise Oil (1 oz.)

Directions

    Sift dry ingredients together.

    Mix all ingredients together. Refrigerate 1 day.

    Take 1 tsp. of batter and roll into ball (approximately size of walnut).

    Use powdered sugar on hands, if it sticks.

    Place on greased cookie sheet.

    Bake at 350° for 18 minutes.

    Bake until no indentation remains when touched.

    Roll in powdered sugar.

    Will keep for months at room temperature in a glass container.
