- 2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed (1 lb.)
- 4 eggs
- 5 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. powdered cloves
- 1 tsp. powdered nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. powdered cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- 2 tsp. crushed cardamon seed
- candied, finely chopped orange peel (very small amount, if desired; this is usually not used)
Directions

1Stir sugar gradually into slightly beaten eggs.

2Add flour, soda and spices, sifted together.

3Mix thoroughly and let stand overnight in a cool place. Roll with hands into balls the size of marbles.

4Place on greased baking sheet and bake in oven at 350° for 15 minutes. Cool and frost with confectioners sugar icing. When frosting has set, store in tightly covered container to ripen for several weeks.
