Ingredients

  • 2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed (1 lb.)
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. powdered cloves
  • 1 tsp. powdered nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. powdered cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 tsp. crushed cardamon seed
  • candied, finely chopped orange peel (very small amount, if desired; this is usually not used)

Directions

    Stir sugar gradually into slightly beaten eggs.

    Add flour, soda and spices, sifted together.

    Mix thoroughly and let stand overnight in a cool place. Roll with hands into balls the size of marbles.

    Place on greased baking sheet and bake in oven at 350° for 15 minutes. Cool and frost with confectioners sugar icing. When frosting has set, store in tightly covered container to ripen for several weeks.
