- 1 stick butter
- 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 5 egg yolks
- 2 c. plain flour
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 5 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Directions

1Cream butter and shortening; add sugar and beat well.

2Add egg yolks.

3Combine flour, soda and salt.

4Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.

5Blend in vanilla.

6Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

7Pour batter into four greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.

8Bake at 350° for 25 minutes.

9Cool and frost.
