Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine (1/4 lb. plus 4 Tbsp.)
  • 3 large onions, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp. marjoram leaves
  • 3/4 tsp. each: pepper, ground sage and thyme leaves
  • 12 c. day old whole wheat or white bread or a combination of the two, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 c. chopped celery
  • 1/2 c. chopped parsley
  • salt

Directions

    Melt 1/2 cup of the butter in a wide frying pan over medium heat.

    Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden (about 15 minutes).

    Add remaining 4 tablespoons butter, marjoram, pepper, sage and thyme.

    Remove from heat.
