  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar

    Cream Crisco, sugar and eggs.

    Make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa; add to the first mixture.

    Add salt, flour, buttermilk and vanilla; mix well.

    Mix in, but do not beat, the vinegar and soda.

    Bake in 2 (9-inch) or 3 (8-inch) pans at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.
