  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. soda, dissolved in 1 Tbsp. vinegar

    Cream the Crisco, sugar and eggs.

    Sift 3 times flour, cocoa and salt.

    Add alternately to creamed mixture with buttermilk, then add vanilla and food coloring.

    Beat well.

    Fold in soda dissolved with vinegar.

    Bake in 2 (8-inch) pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
