- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. vinegar
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 oz. red food coloring (4 little bottles)
- 2 1/2 c. plain flour
Directions

1Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla.

2Add one egg at a time and beat separately.

3Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add to sugar mixture.

4Sift flour and salt together.

5Alternate buttermilk and flour to sugar mixture, starting with flour and ending with flour.

6Combine soda and vinegar and add to mixture. Pour batter into 2 (8-inch) pans.

7Bake 30 minutes at 350°.

8Ice with Red Velvet Cake Icing.
