Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 tsp. basil leaves
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano leaves
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. lemon pepper (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 1 large loaf unsliced French bread
  • 8 oz. yellow cheese (Cheddar, Colby)
  • 8 oz. white cheese (Monterey Jack is good)
  • 3/4 c. warm (not hot) water (110~ to 115~)
  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/4 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c. soft shortening or butter

    Mix:

    In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Add sugar, salt and about half the flour.

    Beat thoroughly 2 minutes. Then add egg and shortening.

    Beat in rest of flour gradually until smooth.
