Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup or 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon cider or 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 garlic cloves, minced (or more)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or more)
  • 2 1/2 lbs country-style pork ribs
  • 1/2 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in 2
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons water
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted
  • 6 thinly sliced green onions
  • 1/2 bunch chopped fresh cilantro leaves (optional)

Directions

  1. 1
In a large bowl, combine the first eleven ingredients. Add the pork and turn to coat.
  2. 2
Place the onion in a 5-qt slow cooker; arrange pork on top.
  3. 3
Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours or until meat is tender.
  4. 4
Strain sauce out into a small pot and heat to boiling. Add cornstarch slurry and stir until thickened; about 1 - 2 minutes.
  5. 5
Pour sauce back into slow cooker and combine.
  6. 6
Place pork on a serving platter; sprinkle with sesame seeds, green onions and chopped fresh cilantro leaves.
  7. 7
You can also remove the meat from the bones and serve it in flour tortillas with a little hoisin sauce, sort of a faux moo shu pork.
