Ingredients

  • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sauterne, dry white wine (regular or nonalcoholic), or apple juice
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 10 to 15 whole cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon curry powder
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, each about 3 inches long
  • 1 15-ounce can sliced peaches in fruit juice, drained
  • 1 15-ounce can sliced pears in fruit juice, drained
  • 16 to 24 honeydew melon balls, fresh or frozen, or 4 medium kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
  • 8 fresh pineapple spears or one 20-ounce can pineapple chunks in their own juice, drained
  • 2 to 4 plums, sliced

Directions

    In a medium saucepan, stir together the brown sugar, sauterne, vinegar, cloves, and curry powder.

    Add the cinnamon sticks.

    Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, or until heated through, stirring frequently.

    Meanwhile, in a large bowl, stir together the remaining ingredients.

    Pour the hot syrup over the fruit.

    Stir well.

    Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes.

    Cover and refrigerate for 8 to 24 hours.
