Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. dates or 12 prunes, cut up
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. vegetable shortening, margarine or butter
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp. liquid sweetener
  • 1 tsp. lemon extract
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°. Cut up dates or prunes into saucepan. Add raisins and water.

    Bring to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Add shortening.

    Mix, then cool.

    Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

    Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch pan.

    Place in preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

    Do not overbake.

    When cool, cut into squares.
