  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 c. thick sour cream (rich cream, let sour by adding 1 Tbsp. vinegar)

    Cream butter and sugar.

    Add unbeaten egg and beat.

    Add flour, baking powder and salt, alternating with milk and flavoring.

    Pour into a fairly deep pan or casserole dish.

    Over this, sprinkle brown sugar (free from lumps), then pour on cream. Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.

    The dough rises to the top and the cream and sugar make a delicious caramel sauce.

    Cool slightly; serve warm upside down.
