Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. lukewarm milk
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. soft shortening
  • 7 c. plain flour, sifted
  • 2 Tbsp. softened butter
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. raisins
  • nuts
  • cherries

Directions

    Mix milk, 1/2 cup sugar and salt together.

    Dissolve yeast in warm water; stir into milk mixture.

    Stir in eggs and shortening. Mix in with spoon, then with hand, the plain flour.

    Add flour in two additions.

    Gather into ball and knead on lightly floured board.

    Knead until smooth and elastic.

    Place in greased bowl. Cover with damp cloth and let rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

    Punch down and let rise again 30 to 45 minutes.

    Divide dough into 2 equal parts (makes 2 large rings).
