Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1 c. sour milk
  • 1/3 c. brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. molasses
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. anise seed
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 c. cold water
  • 1 Tbsp. orange rind
  • 2 1/2 c. rye flour
  • 3 to 4 c. white flour

Directions

    Soften yeast in 1/2 cup water; set aside.

    Combine the next 6 ingredients in a saucepan.

    Bring to a boil and cool to lukewarm. Combine soda and cold water.

    Add this to milk mixture.

    It will bubble up.

    Put all in large bowl and add remaining ingredients. Knead until smooth.

    Place in greased bowl.

    Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in size.

    Punch down and let rest 30 minutes.

    Divide in two parts.

    Form into loaves and place in well-greased pans.

    Cover and let rise until light, about one hour.

    Bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.
