- 2 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 2 Tbsp. salt
- 2 c. milk, scalded
- 1 1/2 c. cold water
- 10 to 12 c. flour
Directions

1Soften yeast in warm water.

2In large 4-quart bowl, mix sugar, shortening, salt and milk until shortening is melted.

3Add cold water; cool to lukewarm.

4Stir in yeast.

5Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough.

6Knead on floured surface until smooth and satiny, 5 to 10 minutes.

7Place in greased bowl, turning to grease all sides.

8Cover with foil or damp cloth.

9Let rise for 2 hours. Punch down and fold in edges, let raise again 30 minutes.

10Place on floured surface and divide into 4 portions.

11Put in greased loaf pans, let raise 1 1/2 hours.

12Bake at 375° for 40 to 50 minutes.
