Ingredients

  • 1 egg 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 12 cups flour, ixcing sugar for sprinkling
  • whipped cream
  • 12 cup butter, softened
  • 12 cup granulated sugar
  • 12 tablespoon brandy (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
  • 12 cup boiling water
  • 1 lemon, juice of
  • 12 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 18 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions

    In a large bowl, combine egg, sugar, sortening, molasses, salt, baking soda and ginger.

    When thoroughly blended, add hot water; stir, then add flour.

    Pour into 9x9-inch baking dish.

    Bake at 350F for 45 minutes, or unti la toothpick inserted in the center comes our clean.

    Cool and sprinkle with icing sugar.

    LEMON SAUCE: Cream butter and sugar together; blend in brandy if using.

    Beat in egg and lemon rind.

    Transfer mixrture to top of double boiler.

    Gradually add boiling water to mixture, stirring constantly.

    Heat 7-8 minutes.

    Stir in lemon juice and spices.

    Serve hot, makes 2 cups.
