- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. white sugar
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 to 1 c. oatmeal
- 1 egg
- 1 c. dates
- 1/2 c. walnuts
- 1 tsp. soda
- 2 Tbsp. water
Directions

1Cut the dates into 3 pieces.

2Cook half of them over low heat with 2 tablespoons water until soft.

3Let cool.

4Cream the sugars, shortening, egg and date paste.

5Sift the dry ingredients and add. Beat smooth.

6Add oatmeal, if desired, and the remaining dates and walnuts.

7Form into balls, dip in sugar and bake at 375°. Makes about 4 dozen.
