  • 1 pkg. yeast (or 2 1/4 Tbsp.)
  • 3 Tbsp. warm water
  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. shortening

    Dissolve yeast in water.

    Sift dry ingredients together.

    Cut in shortening.

    Stir in yeast mixture and buttermilk.

    Roll out onto a floured board and cut into biscuits.

    Allow to rise 1 to 2 hours before baking.

    Bake at 400° for 10 to 12 minutes. Dough keeps well in refrigerator.
