  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 Tbsp. lukewarm water
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 5 to 5 1/2 c. flour

    Dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening. Add yeast and buttermilk to dry ingredients. Knead dough to hold together.

    Chill dough, covered with a towel. Put in refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight. Roll out dough about 1/2-inch thick and cut into rounds with 2-inch biscuit cutter. Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.
