- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 Tbsp. warm water (105-115~)
- 1 c. shortening
- 5 c. flour
- 2 c. buttermilk
- 1/4 c. sugar
- butter or margarine, melted
Directions

1Grease 1 baking pan with melted butter or margarine. Dissolve yeast in warm water.

2Set aside.

3Combine flour, sugar, and baking soda together in mixing bowl.

4With pastry blender or fork, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine buttermilk and yeast water.

5Add to flour mixture; stir with fork until moistened.

6Turn dough onto lightly floured surface.

7Roll dough out 1/2-inch thick.

8Cut with 2 inch biscuit cutter, dipping cutter into flour between cuts.

9Press cutter straight down without twisting for straight-sided evenly shaped biscuits.

10Place close together in prepared pan.

11Cover with damp cloth and let rise 1 hour (dough does not double in size).

12Bake in preheated 400° oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until browned. Brush tops with butter or margarine while hot.
