Ingredients
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 5 c. all-purpose flour
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 c. buttermilk or sweet milk
- 2 Tbsp. very warm water
- 1 tsp. soda
- 3 to 5 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 c. vegetable shortening
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in warm water.

2Sift all dry ingredients into large bowl.

3Mix in shortening with pastry blender.

4Add milk, then yeast mixture.

5Stir until thoroughly moistened.

6Turn onto floured board and knead a minute or two (no rising is required). Roll to desired thickness (1/2 inch is recommended) and cut into rounds.

7Brush with melted butter and bake on ungreased pan at 400° for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

8Baked biscuits freeze well.
