  • 1/4 c. plus 3 Tbsp. butter, divided
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground mace
  • 3 McIntosh apples, peeled, cored and sliced into thin rings
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 1/3 c. cake flour
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg, separated

    Preheat oven to 375°.

    Melt 1/4 cup butter in an 8-inch square pan.

    Add brown sugar and spices; mix well.

    Arrange apple rings over brown sugar mixture.

    Sprinkle with lemon juice.

    Combine dry ingredients in large bowl.

    Add 3 tablespoons butter and cut to resemble coarse crumbs.

    Add milk and vanilla; beat at low speed until moistened.
