- 14 cup butter
- 12 cup brown sugar
- 14 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 large apples, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 13 cups cake flour
- 34 cup sugar
- 1 34 teaspoons baking powder
- 14 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- 12 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg
Directions

1Preheat oven to 375F.

2Melt butter in an 8-inch square pan.

3Add brown sugar and nutmeg and blend well.

4Remove from heat.

5Arrange apple slices, slightly overlapping, on brown sugar mixture.

6Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and set aside.

7Sift flour, baking powder and salt.

8Stir in shortening just to soften and add milk and vanilla.

9Mix until flour is dampened.

10Beat 2 minutes with electric mixer at medium speed.

11Add egg and beat 1 minute longer.

12Pour batter over apples.

13Bake 35 minutes, or until done.
