  • 14 cup butter
  • 12 cup brown sugar
  • 14 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 large apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 13 cups cake flour
  • 34 cup sugar
  • 1 34 teaspoons baking powder
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 12 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg

    Preheat oven to 375F.

    Melt butter in an 8-inch square pan.

    Add brown sugar and nutmeg and blend well.

    Remove from heat.

    Arrange apple slices, slightly overlapping, on brown sugar mixture.

    Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and set aside.

    Sift flour, baking powder and salt.

    Stir in shortening just to soften and add milk and vanilla.
