Ingredients
- 6 tart apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of ground cloves
- 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Directions
-
1Cook the apples in a small saucepan over low heat until they begin to steam.
-
2Stir occasionally to keep them from sticking to the bottom of the saucepan.
-
3Once the apples start to steam, cover the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes.
-
4Break up the apples with a wooden spoon.
-
5The mixture should be fairly smooth and saucelike, but still contain a few soft chunks.
-
6Stir in the cinnamon, cloves, brown sugar, and lemon juice.
-
7Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.
-
8Substitute 6 peeled, cored, and chopped Bosc or Bartlett pears for the apples.
