Ingredients

  • 6 tart apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Directions

  1. 1
Cook the apples in a small saucepan over low heat until they begin to steam.
  2. 2
Stir occasionally to keep them from sticking to the bottom of the saucepan.
  3. 3
Once the apples start to steam, cover the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes.
  4. 4
Break up the apples with a wooden spoon.
  5. 5
The mixture should be fairly smooth and saucelike, but still contain a few soft chunks.
  6. 6
Stir in the cinnamon, cloves, brown sugar, and lemon juice.
  7. 7
Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.
  8. 8
Substitute 6 peeled, cored, and chopped Bosc or Bartlett pears for the apples.
