Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 c. flour
  • 2 c. dried apples or applesauce
  • 1 tsp. soda (in hot apples)
  • 1 lb. raisins
  • 1 lb. figs, chopped
  • 1 c. walnuts
  • 1 c. strawberry preserves
  • 1 Tbsp. cloves
  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg

    Cream shortening and sugar.

    Add beaten eggs. Stir soda into applesauce.

    Reserve 1 cup flour to dredge fruit and nuts. Sift the remaining dry ingredients.

    Add to the creamed mixture alternately with applesauce. Add nuts, fruit and preserves.

    Mix thoroughly.

    Bake in a greased and floured tube pan at 300° for 3 hours. Cool.

    Put in closed container and lay apples slices on top or place a small glass of wine in middle of cake for moisture.
