Basic Bread Pudding

- 3 c. milk
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- 3 slices bread or more
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions

1Scald milk and butter in top of double boiler over boiling water.

2Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes.

3Add to milk.

4Cover and remove from heat.

5Beat eggs until frothy; add sugar and salt. Stir hot milk and bread into egg mixture.

6Add nutmeg and vanilla, mixing well.

7Pour into buttered 1 1/2-quart casserole or baking dish, placed in pan of hot water.

8Bake in moderate oven at 350° about 1 hour or until a knife inserted comes out clean.

9Makes 6 servings.
