Basic Tomato Sauce

Ingredients

  • 6 large cans whole tomatoes or equal amount peeled, chopped tomatoes
  • 2 c. water
  • 15 to 20 cloves fresh garlic, finely minced
  • 1 large white onion, finely minced
  • Crisco oil
  • 1 stick butter (not oleo)
  • 1 c. loosely packed basil leaves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper

Directions

    Saute onion and garlic in a little Crisco oil until lightly brown.

    Pour into large pot.

    Add all remaining ingredients. Simmer over low flame for 3 to 4 hours.

    This sauce keeps well frozen.
