Ingredients
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 c. scalded milk
- 1/4 c. liquid oil (shortening)
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 egg (optional)
- 1/4 c. sugar
Directions

1Place yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar and 1/4 cup warm water in a small bowl.

2Set aside.

3Combine milk, 1/4 cup sugar, shortening and salt in saucepan and heat to just below a boil. Cool to lukewarm. Add 1 1/2 cups flour; stir well.

4Add egg and yeast; blend well. Gradually sift another 2 cups flour until batter begins to turn loose from the sides of the bowl and follow the spoon around the bowl.

5Turn dough out on well floured surface and knead. Place in well oiled bowl and place in warm place until it doubles in size.

6Turn out onto floured surface.

7Knead. Shape into biscuits or loaf and let rise again until double in size. Bake at desired temperature, about 350° to 400°, depending on thickness.
