Hazelnut Shortbread Stars

Ingredients
- 1 cup chopped hazelnuts (filberts) or 1 cup pecan halves
- 2 cups flour
- 12 cup sugar
- 13 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 12 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 ounces white baking bar, melted (optional)
Directions

1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2Place hazelnuts or pecans in a shallow baking pan.

3Bake about 8 minutes or until lightly toasted; cool.

4In food processor bowl fitted with a metal blade place flour, sugar and cornstarch.

5Add butter and vanilla; process with several on/off turns until mixture is crumbly.

6Add nuts and process until mixture is combined but slightly crumbly (mixture should NOT form a ball).

7Place dough on a lightly floured surface and form into a ball.

8Knead until smooth.

9Divide dough in half.

10Wrap each half in plastic wrap and chill about 30 minutes or until easy to handle.

11On a lightly floured surface roll half of the dough at a time to 1/4 to1/2 inch thickness.

12Cut dough into stars or rounds with 2 1/2 to 3 inch cookie cutters.

13Place cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

14Pierce each cutout three times with a fork, going all the way through to the cookie sheet.

15Repeat with second half of dough.

16Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes or until edges and bottoms just start to brown.

17Transfer to wire racks to cool.

18If desired, drizzle cooled cookies with melted white chocolate.
