  • 1 pint (about 12 ounces) berries, any kind
  • Juice and finely grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water

    Gently rinse the berries, pat them dry, and put them in a medium heatproof bowl.

    Using a fork or potato masher, crush the berries into a relatively even consistency.

    Add the lemon juice and zest.

    Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan and put it over medium-high heat.

    Cook, stirring frequently, until all the sugar has dissolved.

    Pour the syrup over the berries and stir to combine.
