  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/3 c. walnut meats

    Cream shortening.

    Add 1 cup sugar and beat until fluffy.

    Add vanilla.

    Sift in dry ingredients alternately with milk.

    Beat egg whites.

    Add 1/3 cup sugar gradually, until stiff.

    Fold into batter.

    Add 1 cup nuts.

    Pour into 2 (8-inch) pans and bake for 25 minutes at 375°.

    Top with your favorite frosting and on sides and between layers.
