  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 c. blackberries (fresh or canned; if canned, drain juice from them)
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 c. buttermilk mixed with 1 tsp. soda

    Preheat oven to 350°.

    Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

    Set aside.

    Cream together shortening and sugar; add eggs, blackberries and buttermilk mixture, mix well.

    Add flour mixture and blend well.

    Put in loaf or round cake pans.

    Bake until tests done with a toothpick (approximately 60 minutes).
