  • 1/2 c. (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. sifted cake flour (not self-rising)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 c. coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate (3 oz. bar)

    Preheat oven to 350°.

    Butter oblong pan.

    Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy, about 3 minutes.

    Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.

    Stir in the vanilla.

    Add flour and salt, beat until well mixed.

    Fold in walnuts, then chocolate pieces.

    Pour batter into pan and smooth the top.

    Bake in center of oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pan before cutting into 2-inch squares.
