- 2 slices day-old white bread, chopped
- 14 cup milk
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground lamb
- 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons curry powder
- 12 teaspoon ground allspice
- 14 teaspoon ground cloves
- 14 teaspoon ground cumin
- 14 cup mango chutney or 14 cup apricot jam
- 14 cup sultana raisin
- 12 cup slivered almonds, toasted
- 1 granny smith apple, peeled, seeded and diced
- 12 grated lemon, zest of
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- milk
- 3 eggs
- 4 bay leaves
Directions

1With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F).

2In a bowl, combine the bread and milk.

3Let soak for 10 minutes.

4Set aside.

5In non-stick skillet, brown the onions in the butter.

6Add the meat and saute until golden brown.

7Season with salt and pepper.

8Add the garlic and spices and cook for 1 minute.

9Remove from the heat.

10Stir in the bread and the remaining ingredients.

11Adjust the seasoning.

12Transfer and press evenly into a 28 x 20-cm (11 X 8-inch) baking dish.

13Bake for 30 minutes.

14In a bowl, combine the milk and eggs with a whisk.

15Season with salt and pepper.

16Pour that egg mixture over the cooked meat, right out of the oven, and garnish with the bay leaves.

17Continue baking for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown.
