- 1 qt. navy beans
- 1/2 c. molasses
- 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/2 lb. bacon
- 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- boiling water
Directions

1Soak beans overnight in cold water.

2In morning, drain and cover with fresh water and baking soda.

3Cook slowly, simmering 10 to 15 minutes.

4Drain beans and rinse in cold water.

5Scald bacon. Pour beans into pot alternating layers of bacon and beans.

6Mix together molasses, mustard, cloves, sugar, salt, pepper and cup of boiling water.

7Pour over beans, adding enough additional water to cover beans.

8Cover pot and bake steadily for 6 hours at 250°. Uncover last 1/2 hour of baking to brown.

9Add water as needed.
