- 1/2 c. butter or margarine
- 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 3 eggs
- 3 c. plain flour
- 1/2 tsp. warm water
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions

1Cream together margarine, shortening and sugar.

2Beat in eggs, one at a time.

3Sift together flour and salt.

4Stir cocoa in warm water.

5Allow to cool and pour in soda.

6To creamed mixture, add sifted flour and salt alternately with cocoa mixture and buttermilk.

7Add vanilla.

8Pour into three greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans.

9Bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes.

10Cool and frost.
