Ingredients
- 4 c. white sugar
- 1 1/2 c. milk
- 1/2 stick margarine
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Directions

1Put three cups of the sugar and the milk in a saucepan; heat to boiling point.

2Put remaining cup of sugar in an iron skillet over low heat; stir as sugar melts and becomes a light brown.

3Remove skillet from heat and slowly pour in the sugar-milk mixture from saucepan, stirring all the while.

4Return to heat and cook until a small dab of the mixture forms a soft ball between the fingers when dropped into cold water.

5Add margarine, vanilla and salt; allow to stand for five minutes.

6Beat until stiff enough to spread on cake or use as candy.
