- 2 c. sifted Martha White self-rising flour
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 7/8 c. buttermilk (1 c. less 2 Tbsp.)
- melted butter or margarine
Directions

1Preheat oven to 450°.

2Sift together flour and sugar.

3Cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4Add buttermilk and stir with a fork only until dough leaves sides of bowl.

5Turn dough out onto lightly floured board or pastry cloth.

6Knead gently just until smooth.

7Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness.

8Cut into rounds with floured 2 1/2-inch cutter.

9Place on ungreased baking sheet.

10Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown.

11Brush hot biscuits with melted butter.

12Makes 10 to 12 biscuits.
