  • 1/2 lb. butter
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 egg yolks, well beaten
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 c. buttermilk, mixed with 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 4 egg whites, beaten stiff

    Add remaining ingredients. Fold in egg whites.

    Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes (two 9-inch pans).
