- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 1/2 Tbsp. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. soda
- 5 c. flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Directions

1Beat eggs.

2Gradually add sugar, shortening and soda, mixed with buttermilk.

3Sift remaining ingredients and add to mixture. Let mixture stand overnight in refrigerator.

4Roll out and cut. Drop in deep, hot fat (375°) and turn over as soon as they rise to the top, nicely browned.

5Drain.

6Makes 3 1/2 dozen.

7Glaze, if desired.
