- 1 1/2 pounds (4 medium) new potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
- Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
Directions

1Place the potatoes in a large saucepan; add enough cold water to cover by 2 inches.

2Bring to a boil; add 1 tablespoon salt, and cook until the potatoes are very tender when pierced with the tip of a paring knife, 20 to 25 minutes.

3Drain; place in a large bowl.

4Mash with a potato masher, then add the buttermilk and butter.

5Season with salt and pepper.

6Mash until smooth and combined.
