  • 12 large cabbage leaves
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. rice (not instant)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp. sage
  • 1/2 tsp. thyme
  • 1 1/4 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp. Crisco oil
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar
  • 2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c. water

    Cover cabbage leaves with boiling water and let stand until limp.

    Drain.

    Combine beef, salt, pepper, rice, onion, egg and seasonings.

    Place a portion of meat mixture in a cabbage leaf, roll and secure with toothpicks.

    Brown in Crisco oil.

    Combine sugar, water, lemon juice and tomato sauce; pour over rolls. Cover and simmer 1 hour.

    Baste now and then.
