California Walnut Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. coarsely chopped Diamond walnuts
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

    Into mixing bowl, sift flour with sugar, baking powder and salt.

    Cut in shortening.

    Stir in 1 1/4 cups of walnuts.

    Add egg, milk and vanilla; mix until ingredients are blended.

    Turn into greased and floured 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.

    Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup walnuts over top.

    Bake at 350° for 60 to 70 minutes, or until loaf tests done.

    Let stand in pan 10 minutes.

    Turn out onto wire rack to cool.

    Makes 1 loaf.
