- 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. confectioners sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
Directions

1Heat oven to 375°.

2Mix thoroughly the first 6 ingredients. Blend in flour and salt.

3Divide dough in half; blend food coloring into 1/2.

4Shape 1 teaspoon dough from each 1/2 into 4-inch rope. Roll back and forth on lightly floured board.

5Place ropes, side by side.

6Press together lightly and twist.

7Place on ungreased baking sheet; curve top of cookie to form a cane.

8Bake about 9 minutes, until set and very light brown.

9Makes about 2 to 4 dozen cookies, depending on size of canes.
