Caramel Layer Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. quick cooking oatmeal
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 24 light colored caramels
  • 2 Tbsp. cream
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 c. chocolate chips

Directions

    Combine flour, salt, soda, brown sugar, and oatmeal.

    Cut butter until particles are fine.

    Reserve 1 cup. Press remaining mixture in bottom of 8-inch square pan.

    Bake at 350° for 10 minutes.

    Combine caramel and cream in double boiler.

    Cook over hot water until melted.

    Blend in 2 Tbsp. flour and spread carefully over base.

    Sprinkle with chocolate chips, then top with reserved crumbs.

    Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes or until delicately browned.

    Makes about 24 bars.
