  • 2 (1/4 oz.) pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water (115~)
  • 1/2 c. warm milk (115~)
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/4 c. chopped onion
  • 1 (8 oz.) tomato sauce
  • 8 slices cheese, quartered

    In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add next 5 ingredients and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto floured surface; knead until smooth, about 4 to 6 minutes. Place in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled. In a skillet, cook beef and onion until done; drain. Stir in tomato sauce. Set aside. Punch down dough; divide into 16 pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough into a 5-inch circle. Top each circle with two pieces of cheese and 3 tablespoons beef mixture. Bring dough over filling to center. Pinch edges to seal. Place seam side down on greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled. Bake at 400° for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
