Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. soft shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 2 c. cut up, well drained, pitted sour cherries (No. 2 can, save juice)
  • 1/2 c. cut up nuts
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 c. water
  • 3/4 c. juice (from cherries)
  • 1/4 tsp. almond flavoring

Directions

    Sift together in bowl the first 3 ingredients.

    Add the soft shortening, 1 cup sugar, egg and milk.

    Blend in the cherries and nuts.

    Pour into greased and floured 9-inch square pan.

    Bake 30 to 40 minutes at 350°.

    Cut into 3-inch squares.

    Serve hot with clear red sauce.
