Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 c. unbleached flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. dry yeast
  • 1 c. milk
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. slivered almonds
  • 1/2 c. mixed candied fruit
  • 1/2 c. raisins
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamon, nutmeg or mace

Directions

    Mix 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt and yeast.

    Heat milk and butter to very warm (120° to 130°).

    Add warm liquid, almond extract and egg.

    Blend until smooth.

    Stir into mixture remaining ingredients and 2 cups flour to form stiff dough.

    Knead until smooth.

    Let rise until doubled.

    Punch down.

    Roll into 12 x 7-inch oval.

    Fold over long side to 1/2 inch opposite side. Cover; let rise until double.

    Bake at 375° for 30 minutes or until light brown.

    Cool; drizzle with powdered sugar glaze.
