Cold Oven Butternut Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 5 eggs
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 jar maraschino cherries, cut in half and well drained
  • 1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. vanilla butternut flavoring

    Cream butter, shortening, sugar and salt.

    Add eggs, one at a time, beating well.

    Add flour and milk alternately, ending with flour.

    Fold in flavoring, cherries and nuts.

    Grease a tube pan (large).

    Start in cold oven and do not open oven door until done. Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 35 minutes.

    Remove from pan soon after taking from oven and cool on wire rack (inverted).
