Ingredients

  • 2/3 c. melted shortening
  • 1 (1 lb.) box brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 3/4 c. sifted flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits (semi-sweet)

Directions

    In a bowl combine melted shortening and brown sugar until well blended.

    Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

    Add sifted flour, baking powder and salt, blending well. Stir in nuts and chocolate bits.

    Spoon the batter (it will be thick) into a well-greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch oblong pan. Bake in a moderate oven (350°) until golden (about 40 to 45 minutes) or when a cake tester inserted comes away clean.

    Remove from oven and cool in pan before cutting into bars or squares.
